Delhi govt to develop Gandhi Nagar market as ‘grand garment hub’ – ThePrint – PTIFeed

New Delhi, June 21 (PTI) The Delhi government on Wednesday announced its plans to develop the Gandhi Nagar market as a “grand garment hub” for economic growth and job creation.  Chief Minister Arvind kejriwal convened a review meeting for the purpose of assessing the progress of this plan. In attendance were Industries Minister Saurabh bhardwaj as well as other senior officials from the department.

Government officials have said that the redevelopment will take place in two phases so as to maintain economic activity.

“The Kejriwal Government is committed to transforming Gandhi Nagar into a prestigious ‘grand Garment Hub’. This ambitious project, aimed at boosting the economy and generating employment opportunities, is being developed in a phased manner,” the government said in a statement.  The statement stated that Gandhi Nagar is a world-renowned ready-made clothing market and gives Delhi its distinctive identity.  “The redevelopment of Gandhi Nagar will serve as a pivotal milestone in elevating Delhi’s economy and creating thousands of new jobs. This redevelopment endeavour not only aims to revitalise Gandhi Nagar but also to enhance business prospects for merchants and provide an exceptional shopping experience for the people,” it said.

The government has said that during the first phase of redevelopment the urgent and immediate concerns of local traders would be addressed.

In the first phase, essential public services, such as drinking water, other amenities and a CCTV camera network, will be provided.

A visual information system, as well as the redesign of street lighting will be implemented.

The government’s statement indicated that in the second stage, it will focus on urban redesigning as well as architectural enhancements to the market.

In this phase, the report said, efforts will also be made to market the area via national and international campaigns, digitalise area information, set up firefighting facilities and upgrade existing infrastructure.

Gandhi Nagar is Asia’s largest ready-made clothing market. According to the statement, however, the increased population density has negatively affected businesses in the region due to the strain placed on existing facilities.  The Delhi government’s objective is to re-imagine Gandhi Nagar, optimising space utilisation and creating world-class infrastructure that will attract customers and foster business growth, it added.
